There are many reasons why studying soils should be considered important. Soils are incredibly complex and studying them can give us greater insight into a variety of scientific fields. By studying soils, we can learn about an area's past geology, biology, chemistry, and climate. As an essential element to agriculture, soil is an invaluable natural resource. Like most natural resources, the amount of fertile soil available to us is finite. For this reason, understanding how to maintain and improve soil health is crucial to humanity's future on Earth. Soils not only provide us our food, but they also recycle our waste, filter our water, interact with our atmosphere , and even clean our pollution.
Given that my future career will be in the field of environmental geology, studying soil is especially important to me. My duties as an environmental geologist could vary widely, from organizing the safe disposal of hazardous materials to consulting for private companies and governmental agencies. Whatever my future job has me doing, it will more than likely involve working with soils. I'm confident that the knowledge I've gained from this course will prove to be valuable to me in the future.
